2006 is the International Year of Deserts and Desertification
More than 100 million people around the world risk forced migration
because of desertification and land degradation.
But desertification can be reversed. Over 70 per cent of IFAD-supported
projects and programmes are in ecologically fragile areas, where they
enable poor rural people to both overcome poverty and protect the lands
and natural resources on which they depend.
